Christ the Redeemer is much more than just a postcard image of Rio de Janeiro, it is one of Brazil’s most recognized symbols and one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. With its open arms, the monument welcomes visitors from all over the world. But do you know all the fascinating facts behind this monumental work? Discover some of them below!

A Gift from the Catholic Church
Christ the Redeemer was conceived as a tribute to the centenary of Brazil’s Independence, celebrated in 1922. The Catholic Church organized a nationwide fundraising campaign, and the faithful contributed to making the project possible.
The monument stands 38 meters (125 feet) tall, including its 8-meter (26-foot) pedestal. The open arms span 28 meters (92 feet), and the total weight of the statue is an astonishing 1,145 tons!
Innovative Materials and Construction
The structure of Christ the Redeemer is made of reinforced concrete, but the outer layer is covered with small soapstone triangles, known for their resistance to weather conditions. These tiles were placed manually by workers over the years of construction.

Designed by Both Brazilians and Foreigners
Although many people associate Christ the Redeemer with Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, the project had international contributions. French sculptor Paul Landowski created the arms and face of the statue, while the Brazilian engineer oversaw the construction.
Christ Has a “Heart”
Inside the monument, there is a heart-shaped cavity positioned in the chest of the statue. This little-known detail symbolizes divine love and protection over the city and its inhabitants.
Inaugurated in 1931
After nearly 10 years of construction, Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated on October 12, 1931. The date was not chosen at random—it coincides with the feast day of Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil.

A Technological Lighting Revolution
The first electric lighting of Christ the Redeemer was turned on using an invention by Guglielmo Marconi, the creator of radio. He sent the command to switch on the lights directly from Italy using radio waves. Thanks to its strategic location atop Corcovado Mountain, 710 meters (2,329 feet) above sea level, Christ the Redeemer is visible from various points in Rio. Its presence is a constant reminder of the city’s grandeur and beauty.
